Want cheap LPG? Go to Bokole slums, Chaani and Port Reitz

FAKE GAS

JANUARY 13, 2010

BY EUGENE OMILO

Police in Mombasa have arrested four men suspected to defraud money from members of the public by selling them fake gas.

Changamwe district AP superintendent Josiah Wantai said the four were arrested at Magongo mainland in the outskirts of Mombasa town with 57 gas cylinders from various petroleum companies in a lorry.

The gas was destined to Bokole slums, Chaani and Portreitz areas where residents have for a long time complained of being supplied with half filled gas.

Wantai advised residents to buy gas from licensed dealers instead of buying cheap gas from unscrupulous suppliers.

He said the four are suspected to be members of a cartel involved in selling fake gas in different parts of Mombasa at reduced prices while taking advantage of the high price of liquefied petroleum products.

The cartels have been targeting areas with low income earners who might be tempted to go for cheaper products.

A dealer in one of the petrol stations in Mombasa, Peter Njuguna said genuine gas comes with a seal from the Kenya bureau of standards but the fake ones usually have no seals.

He said most of those arrested are dealers and urged police to unearth the real culprits involved in the scandal.
