Bamburi school closed as pupils overcome by hysteria

DEMONS

A primary school in Bamburi has been closed temporarily after pupils
reportedly went into hysteria yesterday.

Teachers in Kiembeni primary school were forced to send their pupils
home after they started screaming and hallucinating during their
morning classes.

A teacher, Mariam Wanjiri, said the pupils had just settled for their
morning lessons when a standard eight student started screaming and
throwing herself about the classroom floor.

A few teachers quickly took her and while they were attending to her,
two more pupils from the same class and others from standard seven and
six also followed suit and started to shout.

Wanjiri said soon afterward, the other pupils went into a panic mode
and started running outside their classrooms while shouting.

One of the parents who together with other onlookers had rushed to the
school to see what was happening also fell victim to the strange
condition and started screaming.

The institution’s head teacher Joseph Mutisya said the cause of the
delusions could not be established but a stakeholders’ meeting
including representatives of the parents, teachers and the Municipal
education office was yet to be convened by yesterday afternoon to
discuss the problem.

Local religious leaders from different denominations quickly rushed to
the school which has around 800 pupils to hold prayers in an effort to
cleanse the school of demons which had possessed the pupils.

A teacher who did not wish to be named said the problem started on
Friday when a standard eight pupil, Gideon Chonga, started behaving
strangely after being caned.

“The pupil immediately unbuttoned his shirt and ran into a nearby bush
only to return minutes later while talking to himself and chewing
grass,” the source said.

The teacher added that since the incident happened, pupils have been
in great fear of what would happen to them hence the hysteria.

“We suspect the pupil could be having mental problems because it is
that king of behavior cannot come from a sane person,” said Mutisya
adding that the next course of action will be decided after the
stakeholders meeting.
