Over to you, Amb. Mwakwere

JANUARY 8, 2010

B/G: A recent stampede and frequent traffic jams at the Likoni channel has brought major concern on the danger posed by the old ferries to thousands of users. The Transport ministry has promised to bring new ferries from German but nothing is forthcoming years later. Mombasa residents are hereby given a platform to speak their minds to minister Mwakwere concerning the crisis.
QN: What is your message to Transport Minister Chirau Mwakwere concerning services and the general situation at the Kenya Ferry Services?

Kevin Nzioka, 23, IT specialist, Kiembeni.
We need new ferries now. Our freedom to free movement has been curtailed because of the delays we experience everyday moving to South Coast. Your main role as minister for Transport is to ensure we can move from one place to another smoothly. Please address this problem urgently before we lose our dear ones using the current ferries is tantamount to signing one’s death warranty. If you cannot kindly step aside, you will still have helped us a great deal.

Tamara Bukhala, 22, Accountant, Bamburi.
Wake up sir and listen to us. You seem as if you are living in a different world to ours. Bring yourself to our level and understand the impact of the ferry menace to our economy and human life. We are tired of empty promises all the time. Act, bring new ferries or at least repair the old ones as we await those in Germany.

Nicolas Cheruiyot, 28, Businessman, Mtopanga.
Account for the money released by treasury for the purchase of new ferries. We don’t understand how it takes so much time to procure new ferries when the lives of people using the old ferries are on the line. I advise you to acquire new ferries on credit then let us pay toll charges while crossing to help repay the loan. We should not have excuses when our lives are at stake. Kenya Ferry Services should also be privatized to enhance efficiency in operations.

Abigael Mandi, 20, Secretary, Likoni.
Our patience has run out. If it is true that the ferries in Germany are really ours, bring them to us. Your concern should be our safety. You also come from this region and you know how delicate water transport is. We might not have the powers to remove you from your ministry right now but those who voted for you are the very ones endangering their lives in the old ferries. You will still need us come 2012.

Brigid Wambui, 18, Secretary, Kwale
Charity begins at home.If you truly aspire to serve in a bigger office, keep in mind that we shall judge your ability with what you are doing now.If Coast residents are feeling let down by their own leader, what should Kenyans in other regions expect? We are looking up to you to save us from the impending disaster. We wonder how long it will take for the ferries you promised us to be delivered. Act now because the buck stops with you.

ENDS.
