The Mombasa municipal council has announced a major step forward in service delivery and revenue collection after the successful initiation of the governments’s Rapid Response Initiative.
In his opening remarks, Mayor Ahmed Mohdhar praised the programme alongside the signing of performance contracts as sure ways of ensuring service delivery and achievement of set targets.
He said the RRI initiative had spearheaded the council to emerge tops in the recent awarding ceremony for town and municipal councils in the country in the beautification programme category.
Mohdhar appealed to stakeholders attending the ceremony to give credit to the Council when due as cooperation between the Council and stakeholders in service delivery would ensure the residents of Mombasa benefit from the revenue they give to the council.
“Service delivery is our major concern because we are here to serve. When we have done a good thing, we too deserve to be praised just as you criticize us when there is a problem,” said Mohdhar.
Various departmental heads made presentations on thematic challenge areas they focused on during the past three months under review.
The Town Treasury department which had focused on upgrading and maintaining the books of accounts and improving the Council’s revenue through levying matatus and tuktuks operating within the municipality posted impressive results after doubling the amount of revenue expected.
According to Deputy Town Clerk in charge of Reforms Ms Elipida Mwakamba, the department managed to collect an average of Sh 4.3 million from the anticipated Sh 2.5 million per month during the period.
She said the other departments, Social services, Engineering, Town planning and Human resource also made great strides in service delivery  since the Council embraced the RRI programme in November last year.
Town Clerk Tubman Otieno said the biggest challenge is fighting corruption among the workers as it has been a major hindrance to development of many town councils and municipalities in the country.
Various representatives of businessmen and residents complained of the traffic congestion and corruption going on in the council.
