BODY RETRIEVED

The body of a girl who went missing three weeks ago has been found in an abandoned pit latrine in Likoni’s Soweto area.

Parents of the six year old girl identified as Faith Nakumita who had launched a massive such for the girl since she disappeared on December 13 last year were overcome with grief after positively identifying her body.

Police sources at Likoni police station said the parents are yet to record a statement concerning the incident but had not reported to the station by noon yesterday.

Mombasa OCPD Tom Odera said police have started investigations and the body has been moved to the Coast provincial hospital mortuary for post mortem examination to establish the actual cause of her death.

Residents living near the place where the body was found say they believe the child could have been kidnapped elsewhere before she was killed and her body damped in the latrine.
“We witnessed a similar incidence of a body being damped in a hole in 1997 after the infamous Kayabombo clashes,” said Norman Kirigha, a resident.

The residents complained of the many open holes around the place that have become a health hazard.

They appealed to the area councilor Omar Ochieng’ to seal off the pits before they cause other accidents.

The body was discovered when a neighbour whose goat had accidentally fallen in the same pit went to retrieve it only to find the rotten body inside.

He then reported to the local police station before the officers came to take away the body.

A rescue team lead by the Mombasa municipal council fire fighters went to the scene to retrieve the body which had decomposed beyond recognition.

One of the firemen said the body was identified because of the school uniform the girl was wearing at the time she went missing.
